How the Making Things Happen Intensive Changed My Life

A year ago today, I had the privilege of attending the Making Things Happen Intensive in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It had been a long-held dream of mine to listen to attend, and I am so much better for it now that I have! While it’s hard to put the experience into words, I am excited to share a snippet of the way MTH changed my life.

I thought I had a good idea of what I wanted to get out of the conference before attending, but I soon realized that God had other plans for me there.  Dillon and I were soon to be engaged at the time and I was wrapping up one of the hardest seasons of my life. I began Day 1 by reading scripture and journaling in a comfy chair in the first floor of the Inn.

After getting ready, I walked down the iconic black-and-white-tiled hallway of the Carolina Inn feeling expectant. The MTH team is incredible in so many ways, including the warm greetings they give to each attendee upon arrival! I immediately felt valued and welcome.

These feelings deepened when the speakers entered the room. Lara, Emily, Gina, Nancy, Rhiannon, Katelyn, and Amber immediately joined arms with us. I had a preconceived idea that they would speak and we would do the work, but I soon realized we were all about to walk through this together. And we did.

We spent much of day one stripping ourselves of the weight we’d been carrying around. Everyone had their own burdens to set down, deeply personal and all their own. At the time, my mind was very clouded from all the challenges of the year, but looking back I can see that I let go of fear at Making Things Happen. Fear in every shape had gripped my heart for far too long.

We dug deep that day and I wrote so much. I had so many ideas about how I wanted to change my life and felt so empowered but also so small at the same time. For me, it was a time of small beginnings and new vision. God blessed me with a clear picture of ways to use my time and disciplines to develop.

The timing was perfect because we got to hear the personal stories of growth from each of the speakers. Hearing how others began their own journey inspires me so much. When I first visit a blog, I usually search for the first content posted by the writer because I love to see how people have grown into who they are now. It was incredible to sit face to face with the ladies who I have virtually turned to for professional information and spiritual testimony.

Now, a year later, I am able to see the ways that Making Things Happened prepared my heart for where I am now. God used those two days to outline the next seasons of my life for me, providing me with a general framework of what matters most. Since then, I have grown and seen practical application of the tools and perspective-shift gained at Making Things Happen. I hope to attend again in the future!
