Bermuda: Docking + Horseshoe Bay

The first post in my Bermuda recap series can be found here, where I introduce our ship, the Norwegian Dawn, and walk through the embarkation on Friday and our day at sea on Saturday.

When I woke up on Sunday morning, we were approaching Bermuda with the shoreline visible in the horizon. It was Mother’s Day, so our family met up for breakfast at one of the dining rooms to share the meal together before the ship docked. By the time we had finished eating, we could see the vibrant array of colorful homes on the shore. The water was becoming increasingly turquoise and there were patches of coral reefs on either side of the ship.

The weather was mild and the sun was breaking through the clouds, making for a beautiful arrival. I got a cup of tea and joined my family as they gathered on one of the upper decks to watch the ship approach the dock. It was a relaxing and lovely way to make our arrival. We docked at King’s Wharf in the Royal Naval Dockyard around eleven, ushered in by applause from all of the guests who were eager to disembark and get our first taste of the island.

Once the ship had been tied to the dock and we had been given clearance to disembark, we changed into beachwear and made our way to the gangway as a party of seventeen. I was glad to step onto land for the first time since Friday in a different country that was there to be appreciated and explored. We piled into a van for our enjoyable drive to Horseshoe Bay.

If you ever go to Bermuda, I suggest you try to find him and have him show you around! He introduced us to landmarks along the way and provided us with history of the island as we drove along the winding roads from the dockyard to the beach. I was soaking up every bit of that drive, wanting to learn as much as I could.

When we arrived to the beach, I took off my sandals and felt the silky pink sand between my toes. We set our bags down and made our way to the water to splash around, snorkel, and build sandcastles. It was incredible to have everyone there at the same time to enjoy the afternoon together. The adventurer in me wanted to climb one of the rock formations that framed the beach, so I convinced my dad to join me and we made our way to the top. The view was incredible, providing panoramic views of the beach and the ocean on all sides.

After enjoying a few hours on the beach, we were chauffeured back to the dockyard by the lovely Heads. Once we were back on the ship we dispersed to shower off the sand and freshen up for dinner. One of my favorite memories from the trip was the dinner that we shared that evening. Everyone from our family was sharing bites of their meals with each other and savoring every bit of the experience. I enjoyed a spring roll, a caesar salad, and lasagna for my meal, sampling bites of chicken cordon bleu and spaghetti carbonara too. I ordered a slice of carrot cake and then excused myself from the table for a few minutes so that I could run up to the top deck to watch the sunset. Watching the sunset each night was also one of my favorite parts of the week. It was quiet, breathtaking, and provided a few moments to slow down, quiet my thoughts, and be completely wrapped up in God’s glory.

Later that evening we sat on the pool deck for an 80s party, sipping pina coladas and enjoying the warm island breeze. I was about to return to my room for the night when my cousins suggested that we go dancing in one of the clubs for a little while. It was so much fun to make memories inventing dance moves and laughing together. Sunday was a wonderful first day in Bermuda and left my heart filled to the brim with excitement for the adventures that the next day would bring.
