Ideas for a Meaningful Start to 2017

Hooray! It’s the first Monday of 2017 and the lightness of a fresh start can be felt all around. I have been particularly fond of New Years since the start of 2014 when I first realized the positive impact that can be made from taking small, intentional steps early in the year. I’m excited to share with y’all a collection of resources and ideas for a meaningful start to 2017. These are some of my favorite tools, blog posts, and simple steps that can have a huge payoff as you form new habits and routines in the new year. I hope they bless you in the way they’ve blessed me!

Ideas for a Meaningful Start to 2017

craft an inspiration board of images, words, scripture, and quotes to motivate you through the year ahead. Gather your favorite pins on a Pinterest board or put together digital images with Photoshop, Illustrator, or Canva. I created mine over the weekend and am excited to share it here on Friday!

— find a Bible reading plan that gets you excited about reading God’s Word. There are great options available through the YouVersion app and She Reads Truth, but you can also simply choose one book to read at a time (I’m starting with Mark!).

define goals that are rooted in what matters most to you. As Lara Casey says, “There is nothing magical about January 1st.” I really enjoy using the PowerSheets workbook each year but Lara also offers a free goal setting series on her blog. It’s not too late to start!

— talk to your loved ones about their dreams and priorities for 2017 and cheer them on in their endeavors. You might find an overlap or mutual goal that you can work toward together.

update your wallpaper on your phone and computer to something clean, pretty, and inspiring. My favorite resources for wallpaper downloads are available from Lara, Emily, and Ashlee.

simplify your spaces and get rid of excess to make room for what matters most. Emily Ley is offering a free simplicity challenge on Instagram that you can follow along with here.

make a reading list of books to motivate and grow you throughout the year and commit to reading a bit each day. I’ll be sharing mine here next week! I’ve found great titles for my own list through Nancy Ray’s yearly reading lists (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017) and these posts by Valerie Woerner.

invest in a planner that works for you. I prefer to have a paper copy to organize my schedule and to-do list, but Google Calendar or iCal work well too. The Simplified Planner is my favorite but there are also found cute options at Target! Additionally, I found a pretty print-at-home planner available for purchase from Saffron Avenue (shown in the image above).

refresh your prayer life and invite God into your day. Praise Him for His faithfulness, ask Him to reveal Himself to you, and open your heart to His presence. Write your prayers down in a plain notebook or a prayer journal to refer back to each day. I’ve found it helpful to read posts like this by my friend Val and inspirational books like these ones.

Do you have any favorite traditions or steps you take to start the new year well? Please share them in the comments below so we can learn from and inspire each other!
